We are pleased to announce the 37th Annual Conference of the Israel Association for Theoretical Linguistics (IATL), which will take place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on October 19 and 20, 2022. The conference will consist of a general session and a special session on Semitic Morphology. Talks will be 30-minute long plus 10 minutes for discussion. The final format of the conference – physical or virtual – will be determined based on the epidemic situation. A poster session will be included if the conference will take place in a physical format.

General Session:
We invite submissions of abstracts for presentations of previously unpublished research in all areas of theoretical linguistics, including, but not limited to: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and computational linguistics.
Special Session – Semitic Morphology:
Since the early 80’s (McCarthy 1981), the question of how to represent Semitic morphology has been the focus of much discussion in phonology and morphology. Is template morphology inherently different from concatenative morphology and if so, how? Semitic morphology has also figured prominently in the development of the notion of ROOT in morphology and the syntax-lexicon interface. Many questions regarding the appropriate treatment of Semitic morphology and its relation to concatenative morphology remain open: is the notion of a ROOT necessary for a perspicuous theory of word-formation in Semitic languages? Are the templates spell-outs of functional structure and if so which? Does the apparent root and pattern morphology of Semitic languages have consequences for language acquisition and processing?
We invite submissions of abstracts for talks or posters presenting novel research related, but not restricted, to the questions outlined above and the interfaces of Semitic morphology with phonology, syntax and the lexicon, encouraging empirical coverage of a variety of Semitic languages, diversity of theoretical approaches and experimental methodologies.
Abstract Submission Guidelines:
Abstracts should be no longer than two pages, including examples and references. Page format: A4, 2.54cm (one inch) margins on all sides, 12-point font, single line spacing. Submissions are restricted to at most one single-authored and one co-authored abstract per person.

The abstract should be submitted in PDF format. When submitting your abstract, please indicate whether you wish your abstract to be considered both for presentation at the general session and the special session, (which will be decided by the program committee), or if you prefer that your abstract be considered only for the main session or only for the general session. Please indicate as well whether you would like your abstract to be considered for a talk or a poster.
